Philanthropist's North-East Retreat

A modern interior for a global family

This interior renovation reimagines a standard builder’s colonial as a refined, contemporary retreat for a philanthropic family of world travelers. The original home’s compartmentalized plan and generic detailing were stripped away to reveal a more honest, crafted architecture defined by warmth, light, and spatial clarity.

Exposed timber beams, sculpted ceilings, and bold structural gestures introduce rhythm and scale to the re-organized living spaces. Natural materials of oak, limestone, and patinated metals, create a palette that is both grounded and worldly, complementing art and objects collected from across the globe.

At its heart, the open kitchen and great room serve as a shared gathering place for an extended family, framed by expansive windows and simple geometries. Throughout, custom furnishings, integrated lighting, and precise millwork lend a sense of effortless sophistication, transforming an ordinary suburban house into a cosmopolitan haven of modern comfort and generosity of spirit.
