A Bibliophile’s Residence

Where art, architecture, and literature

find a common language

Set within a leafy Westport CT neighborhood near Compo Beach, this residence transforms a traditional shingle-style house through a precise and poetic dialogue between old and new. The existing home, once ornate and compartmentalized, was carefully edited back to its architectural essence. Its trim, eaves, and profiles refined to create a quiet backdrop for a distinctly modern addition.

The new volume, composed of gabled forms in wood and white stucco, stands as a confident counterpoint to the softened shingled shell. Its geometry is crisp, its proportions deliberate, yet it shares a common language of scale and material warmth. Together, the two structures create a composition that feels both familiar and forward-looking, a home grounded in tradition but reimagined for contemporary life.

Inside, the spaces unfold with color, texture, and light. The living room, a tall and airy volume, anchors the plan and opens to the garden through wide glass doors that blur the line between interior and landscape. Art-filled corridors lead to a richly layered library where books, paintings, and furniture mingle in intimate proximity. Throughout, the architecture defers to the client’s passions for reading, collecting, and living among objects that tell a story.

Materials were selected for their tactile resonance and crafted detailing: brushed brass rails, lacquered cabinetry, hand-applied wallpapers, and vividly upholstered pieces that bring personality and warmth to the disciplined geometry. The interplay of old and new, texture and restraint, creates a home that feels curated yet lived-in, modern in form but deeply human in spirit.
